Frequently Asked Questions
Which Uniden detectors are supported?
rDetect supports Uniden R4, R8, and R9 radar detectors with Bluetooth enabled. The R8 is the primary tested device. R4 and R9 support is based on shared protocol documentation and may have unverified settings. Make sure your detector's firmware is up to date for the best experience.
Why can't my phone find my detector?
Ensure Bluetooth is enabled on both your iPhone and detector. Your detector should be powered on and in pairing mode. Try moving closer to the detector and restart the app if needed.
Does rDetect work without an internet connection?
Yes! rDetect communicates directly with your detector via Bluetooth. No internet connection is required for core functionality. iCloud sync is optional and only runs when enabled.
Why am I not receiving alerts?
Check that your detector is connected (shown in the Connect tab). Ensure your detector is powered on and the Bluetooth connection is active. Also verify your phone's notification settings allow rDetect alerts.
How do I update my detector settings?
Once connected, navigate to the Settings section in the app. Changes are synced directly to your detector via Bluetooth in real-time.
Does rDetect have an Apple Watch app?
Yes. rDetect includes a full Apple Watch companion app with real-time alerts, haptic feedback by band type, alert history, and mute controls. The Watch app requires watchOS 10 or later.
What are GPS lockouts?
GPS lockouts automatically learn and suppress false alert locations (like automatic door openers). After encountering the same signal at the same location multiple times, rDetect will mute it. You can also create manual lockouts and export/import your lockout database.
Does iCloud sync share my data with anyone?
No. iCloud sync uses your private iCloud account to back up and sync GPS lockouts, POIs, and settings profiles across your own devices. No data is sent to any third-party server. iCloud sync is optional and disabled by default.
Is my data private?
Yes. rDetect does not collect or transmit personal data. All data is stored locally on your device. If you enable iCloud sync, data syncs only to your private iCloud account. See our Privacy Policy for details.
What are the system requirements?
rDetect requires iOS 17.0 or later for iPhone, iPadOS 17.0 or later for iPad, watchOS 10 or later for Apple Watch, and macOS 14.0 or later for rDetect Manager on Mac. Home screen and Lock Screen widgets are included with the iPhone and iPad app.
What are Points of Interest (POIs)?
POIs let you mark locations like speed traps, school zones, construction zones, or any custom waypoint. rDetect alerts you with voice and visual warnings as you approach. POIs sync across devices via iCloud and can be managed from your Mac with rDetect Manager.
What analytics does rDetect offer?
The Analytics dashboard shows alert trends over time, breakdowns by band and time of day, corridor detection for frequently-alerted routes, and spatial pattern analysis. Analytics are available on both iPhone and Mac.
Can I export my data?
Yes. rDetect supports exporting lockouts, POIs, and alert history in CSV, JSON, GPX, and KML formats. You can also import data from these formats. The Data Hygiene wizard helps identify and clean up duplicate or stale entries before exporting.
What is HUD mode?
HUD (Heads-Up Display) mode provides a minimal driving interface showing your speed, speed limit, trip stats, and active alerts without clutter. It's designed for quick glances while driving.
Is there a macOS app?
Yes. rDetect Manager is a macOS companion app that lets you browse and edit lockouts and POIs, view alert history and analytics, manage settings profiles, and import/export data from your Mac.
Are radar detectors legal?
Radar detector legality varies by jurisdiction. It is your responsibility to understand and comply with local laws. rDetect does not encourage illegal use.
